Undermine is a Roguelike action game developed by Thorium Entertainment and published by Fandom. If that sounds familiar it is because it is, Fandom is the popular website that provides a wiki platform for video games. Undermine is their first published game and it is a phenomenal start for them just entering the industry and hopefully they continue publishing titles as good as Undermine. The AARP has reported that 44% of people over 50 have played a video game at least once a month in 2019. There are many ways in which video games benefit us from increasing our cognitive abilities and preventing brain related diseases to increasing physical dexterity in our hands. It is time we give up in thinking that video games are "a waste of time" or that we should "Go play outside instead". Many of us have grown up hearing those very same words spoken again and again to us. Over the last 2 decades video game guides and wiki's have become a standard part of playing video games. There are many reasons why but one of the main ones is that people are limited in time and don't want to spend hours trying to figure out what to do next. Second many games are not intuitive in their design and require guides and wiki's to use alongside playing the game. Titles that require crafting and recipe's have become more and more popular over the last decade with the release of games such as Minecraft, Terraria, and survival simulation games. Often these games will not have a database of crafting recipe's and it is up to you the player to figure them out one by one. And if they do it is often far easier to look up the recipe online then try to find it in-game. Many of us are familiar with the abundance of Wiki's and guides that can be found online. Many of us are used to searching for the very best games out there. We are always on the hunt for the best of the best and in doing so we leave a lot behind us that we hardly ever notice. These are games that lack polish, detail and much more they lack the design of a good game. We let these fall by the wayside as we search for highest rated games to play. By doing so we miss adding something important to our overall experience with the amount of games out there. Why would anyone want to play poorly reviewed games? Games that receive less than an 7/10 on reviews, games that are negatively reviewed on Steam- It seems like one would want to do the opposite, to stay away from those games and play games that receive good review scores and that are fun to play. Taking notes and gaming is a phenomenal experience and an experience that many gamers share. It used to be a necessity. Paying games and taking notes while gaming was the norm due to the nature of games back in the day especially the 80's and 90's computer games. Games such as Myst required much of the player in a way that games today do as well if you know which games to look towards. Yes platformers were a popular genre and didn't usually require pen and paper to progress and to get to the next stage or solve the next puzzle. Metroidvania games however did require intimate knowledge of the area and drawing a map was usually quite helpful. Puzzle games as well required the player to memorize certain parts of the game as the game progressed. It was often helpful to write down what you thought you would need to know later on in the game. This blog received it's name from my memories of gaming as a kid growing up, especially on Saturday mornings, when my brother and I had the whole day off from school and would wake up as early as we could so that we could start the day off by gaming together. Those are my favorite memories of when i was a kid. I can still feel the euphoria that i felt from waking up and knowing I could spend a few hours completely absorbed in my favorite game with my friends. A lot of those Saturday's were spent eating Ice Cream (my favorite food to this day) and gaming with my brother. Our neighbor would at times come over and bring a few of his games so that we could play together. We had a Nintendo 64 game system and a CRT TV.
